Antibiotics are important weapons in the medical armamentarium. The first antibiotic was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928 and named “penicillin” after the fungus produces it , penicillium notatum.

Antibiotics exert their therapeutic effect by intefering with bactrial growth and/or multiplication. They present by this way an excellent link between clinical sciences and microbiology (see also: The bacterial growth curve). The dramatic influence of antibiotic discovery can be realized by combating illnesses like plague (or black death) that caused horrible epidemics in Europe in the 14. century.

Microbial infection, e.g. bacterial infection, depending on the immune response of the human can cause a wide range of illnesses as easy as small stye or as serious as septic shock.
